Great Travel Locations for Retirees

Retirement is a great time to go out and explore the world. New foods, people, languages, and cultures are awaiting your senses! If you are interested in travel, here are a few suggestions for places to visit with all your newfound free time.

Also, an important note before we continue: all the places weā€™re suggesting here are very English-friendly. You donā€™t need to know any of the native languages at all to visit these places. Signs are generally written in both English and the native language, and almost all residents of the cities here speak English in addition to other languages.

Rome, Italy

This is a city filled with history and beautiful sights. Here you can see the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and the Roman Forum. Each of these areas is surrounded by restaurants that give you fantastic views of the sights and also have fantastic food. A must for fans of Italian food and gelato.

Reykjavik, Iceland

You donā€™t have to be able to pronounce the name of this city to understand why itā€™s worth visiting. This is a great place for outdoorsy types and nature lovers. The volcanic landscape is beautiful and surprisingly alienā€“youā€™ll feel like youā€™re on another planet! There are many unique land features spread across the island that are easily accessible through fairly cheap toursā€“you can see geysers, glaciers, volcanos, waterfalls, and hot springs all in one tour.

The hot springs are a major attraction in Icelandā€“you can bathe in these giant geothermal spas surrounded by the green and black rocks. The Blue Lagoon is the most popular hot spring to visit. The water there is actually blue! But the recently opened Sky Lagoon is a cheaper (and just as visually stunning) alternative that offers a view of the north Atlantic Ocean as you bathe.

Paris, France

Another great spot for food lovers, Paris offers all kinds of cuisine to its visitors. In addition to the well-stocked cafes and patio dining, youā€™ll also find incredible architecture and museums. You can take trips to the Louvre and the Paris Museum of Modern Art. One thing to keep in mind if you do go to the Louvre: you can see many of the major works there in a few hours (the Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, Liberty Leading the People, etc.), but it is a massive museum. If you are an art lover you may want to set aside more than one day to visit.

Of course, there is also the Eiffel Tower. The plaza where it sits is great for picnics, and just sitting to admire the landscape. You can also climb to the top of the tower and see the city from above!
