Easy-to-Grow Houseplants for a Lively Home

Easy-to-Grow Houseplants for a Lively Home

When you’re retired and spending lots of time at home, you might notice that your home could use some liveliness. Plant parenting is a fulfilling activity that can help you stay connected with nature, learn new facts, and keep up a routine. If you’re not sure where to begin, here are three pet-safe, low light houseplants that you can use to enliven your favorite rooms:

  1. Donā€™t Underestimate the Cast-Iron Plant

The cast iron plant is known for its ability to thrive in difficult conditions, needing only minimal water and sunlight to grow. It can reach a height of 4 feet and has delicate, curved leaves that look attractive when placed in large pots. There are various kinds of cast iron plants, and they all do well when kept in a warm room and watered regularly during the spring season.[1]

  1. The Vibrant Moth Orchid

This three-petal flower is sure to liven up any room! Though some gardeners may avoid having flowers as house plants due to their brief lifespan, the moth orchid is an exception to this rule. It prefers bright, indirect light and should be watered moderately; direct sunlight can cause damage to its leaves, and overwatering may lead to clogged soil. With proper care, the moth orchid will show off vivid white, yellow, purple, and orange petals for three to four months.[2]

  1. The Luscious Watermelon Peperomia

This exotic flora flourishes in a luxuriant, lush way, and its leaves are patterned like watermelons. The watermelon peperomia is non-toxic to animals and flowers in the spring and summer and reaches a height of 12 inches when it is fully grown. It looks best in smaller planters and should be placed in a spot that receives bright, indirect sunlight. Even though it needs lots of water, too much will cause the roots to rot and kill the plant. Its abundant foliage may appear limp, but if it is excessively drooping, it is a sign of dehydration.

These three houseplants have different sizes, appearances, and levels of care they require. Even though they are safe to have in a home with cats or dogs, it is important to keep them away from children, as they can be poisonous to humans. Growing these is relatively straightforward, since they can thrive in difficult conditions. And with proper care, they can look magnificent, ambitious, and vibrant in your home.

Just like plants, your finances need to be well nurtured so you afford a comfortable lifestyle in retirement.Ā To find out how best to tend to your funds, sign up for a complimentary review of your finances with us today.
